A Good Base Camp

Mountain Home sits right in the middle of the Ozarks, and that’s exactly what makes it such a good place to park the rig for a while. Two big lakes, some of the best trout water in Arkansas, and a trail or two — all inside an easy drive. You can fish the morning, swim the afternoon, and still be back at your site for supper. No resort crowds, no lines, no fancy dress code. Just a working little Ozark town with good water in every direction.

Norfork Lake

This one’s our backyard. Norfork Lake has clear water, steady fishing for bass, crappie, and walleye, and boat ramps a short drive from the park. On a hot summer day, there’s nothing better than anchoring up in a quiet cove and jumping in. The ramps fill up on weekends, so get there early if you want a good parking spot.

Bull Shoals Lake

Bull Shoals is the big one — wide open water, miles of shoreline, and some of the best bass fishing in the state. It’s a little farther out, but the drive’s an easy one and the water’s worth it. Bring the boat, pack a lunch, and plan on staying all day.

White River & Norfork Tailwater Trout Fishing

Below Bull Shoals Dam, the White River runs cold and clear all year long — just right for rainbow and brown trout. The Norfork tailwater below Norfork Dam is smaller but fishes every bit as good, and it’s closer to the park. Folks drive in from all over the country to fish these two stretches. Local guides know every hole in the river, and the trout bite whether it’s July or January.

On Land

Not a water day? David’s Trail winds through the hills right around here — good boots and a water bottle and you’re set. Downtown Mountain Home still has its old courthouse square, with local shops worth a look. Kids get a kick out of the Norfork National Fish Hatchery, where you can see thousands of trout up close. And the local parks are fine for a picnic or a quiet walk when you just want to stretch your legs.
