Here’s the math that matters: a month at Mountain Home RV Park costs less than three nights at a White River fishing lodge. Same river. Same trout. You just sleep in your own rig.
We’re a 40-site, working-class RV park in Mountain Home, Arkansas — a short drive from the White River’s famous trout water. Plenty of our monthly folks are here for one reason: fish every day, sleep cheap, do it again tomorrow.
Why the White River
The White River below Bull Shoals Dam is one of the best trout fisheries in the country. Cold, clear water. Big rainbows. Browns that’ll ruin your sleep. And Cotter, Arkansas — a short drive from the park — is the “Trout Capital of the U.S.A.” by actual Arkansas state law (AR Code § 1-4-123). They don’t hand that title out for nothing.
Know the regs before you go
Arkansas Game and Fish Commission trout rules (effective February 1, 2026, until further notice):
- White River, Bull Shoals Dam to Norfork Access: keep 2 rainbows under 14 inches per day, release everything else.
- North Fork River, Norfork Dam to Norfork Access: same — 2 rainbows under 14 inches, release the rest.
- White River, Norfork Access to the Hwy 58 bridge at Guion: 2 trout per day, only 1 over 14 inches.
Regs change. Check current AGFC regulations at agfc.com before you go. Don’t take our word for it on the water.
Fish the generation schedule, not just the clock
The White River is a dam-controlled river. When they’re generating power at Bull Shoals Dam, the water comes up fast and the wading gets dangerous. When they’re not, it’s some of the finest wade fishing anywhere.
Check the generation schedule before you head out — the Southwestern Power Administration posts it daily (search “SWPA generation schedule”). Low water mornings are gold. High water? That’s drift boat time, or a good excuse to do laundry back at the park.
Bring the grandkids: Dry Run Creek
Right below Norfork Dam, next to the Norfork National Fish Hatchery, runs Dry Run Creek — and it’s special. It’s open to kids under 16 and mobility-impaired anglers only. Catch-and-release, single barbless hook, artificial lures only.
It’s some of the easiest trophy trout water in America, and your grandkids will talk about it for years. Tour the hatchery while you’re there — it’s free and open daily, and the kids love watching the raceways.
